For people who like the health benefits of eating oatmeal, but not the plain taste, or the work of making it from scratch, there are easy ways to add flavor.

Packets of instant oatmeal can be used to avoid the work of cooking porridge from scratch. However, that raises the issues of taste and additives. Flavored instant oatmeal is tastier, but has more things added during processing. Regular instant oatmeal has less things added, but lacks flavor.

The good news is that regular instant oatmeal can taste good. It just needs something easy added to give it more flavor.

Adding Flavor to Regular Instant Oatmeal

Regular instant oatmeal can be made quickly using the microwave or boiling water from a kettle. The directions are included in the package. Any of the following choices can be added to give it a tasty flavor. They can also be combined to suit individual preference.

  • apple sauce
  • frozen fruit (small pieces like berries work best)
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon or cinnamon sugar
  • any dried fruit such as raisins (large pieces can be cut up)
  • canned fruit (packed in its own juice)
  • rice, soy or skimmed milk (warmed)
  • chopped fresh fruit or berries
  • yogurt
  • maple syrup
  • nuts
  • honey
  • peanut butter
  • coconut oil
  • flaxseed meal
  • granola

An individual can use her imagination and try out different combinations of these suggestions. Or she can experiment with other ideas that add a favorite flavor.

Regular Instant Oatmeal and Special Occasions

There isn’t any need to forego oatmeal on special occasions or holidays. Ingredients that are a little more decadent can be added. Some examples are chocolate chips, carob chips, butter, cream, whole milk, cream cheese or expensive berry syrup. The only limit is the limit of the imagination.

Instant Regular Oatmeal is a Fast Food

Sometimes the rush of getting ready for the day doesn’t leave much time for preparing a healthy lunch.

A packet of instant oatmeal is very easy to carry for a quick lunch idea. It is easy to take along some dried fruit, yogurt, a can of fruit or a small container of apple sauce to add to it at lunchtime. Oatmeal is not only nutritious, but also filling. It provides good energy that burns slowly.

Adding flavor to regular instant oatmeal requires very little time and effort, providing another tasty and healthy food to help create a nutritious diet.

Instead of going sweet -- think of savory. I often cook oatmeal using fat free low sodium boxed chicken broth. Add-in such as chopped leftover, fresh or frozen vegetable and meat along with a shake of herbs or spices make for a very quick cup of 'soup' It's an excellent fast meal especially when I plan for it by prepacking and freezing the add-in precooked meats and vegetables.
