Resources to Help Prepare Healthy Meals for Diabetics

There is lots of terrific information available online and in print to help diabetics prepare healthy, low-sugar meals.

Being a diabetic doesn’t mean one must subsist on blanched broccoli, rice cakes and Diet Coke. Making sure your diet is packed full of healthy grains, fruits and vegetables is a given, but you don’t have to ban desserts from your life. The following magazines, websites and cookbooks will guide you toward healthy, not bland, diabetic meals.

Diabetes Forecast- Both the print and online versions of the magazine feature diabetic-friendly sides, entrees and appetizers and desserts with the newest developments in exercise and nutrition.

Diabetes Living- The main focus of Diabetes Living is food-each issue comes with a tantalizing dish on the cover. Each recipe comes with nutritional values and exchange rates, making it easy to see how the dishes will fit into your meal plan. Check out the Spring 2009 issue, which features strawberry layer cake.

Eating Well- Every issue brims with dishes on all sides of the spectrum, vegetarian and omnivore included. Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus anyone? Although not geared specifically for diabetics, each issue features a variety of dishes. The magazine also publishes “The Eating Well Diabetic Cookbook,” which includes muffins and desserts and is divided into 1500 and 2000 calorie plans.

The Post Punk Kitchen- The PPK is a great resource for vegans and vegetarians-with minimal searching it can also be a treasure trove for diabetics looking to increase their daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Cranking the Ramones while dishing up sweet potato fries and winter squash soup is optional.

Fix- It and Forget -It Diabetic Cookbook: Slow-Cooker Favorites to Include Everyone- Errands, work and kids limit the time people have to cook, leaving many diabetics to grab the closest-and sometimes unhealthy-food to keep going. Delicious options such as venison in sauce inhabit this tome by Phyllis Good. In the pot at breakfast, ready at dinner.

The Diabetes Cookbook for Dummies-Not only does this cookbook supply 112 recipes like soy waffles and oriental beef and noodle salad, it also provides guides on how to navigate restaurants, decipher food labels and help kids develop healthy eating habits.

The All-Natural Diabetic Cookbook-This book, which won the 2007 Gourmand Best in the World Award for Best Health and Nutrition Cookbook, focuses on recipes without processed food.

The Big Book of Diabetic Desserts-This collection, compiled by the American Diabetic Association will satisfy a diabetic’s sweet tooth without wrecking havoc on one’s diet.

Holly Cleggs Trim and Terrific Diabetic Cooking-Holly Cleggs does a great job of providing quick meals for diabetics on the go.
