Red River Cereal is an all natural hot cereal from Canada. Most people eat it plain with perhaps some sweetener and milk. Here are a few ideas to up the flavor ante.

Red River Cereal is a simple and wholesome hot breakfast product that originated in the Red River Valley of Western Canada. It's a good source of fiber and contains no additives. It has been a favorite of a certain breed of cereal lover since its appearance in the 1920's.

Preparing Red River Cereal

Most people are content with eating Red River Cereal the same way they would eat oatmeal. There's nothing wrong with that. It can be prepared in a microwave oven, but it comes out better when cooked on a stove in accordance with the instructions on the box. For a single serving this means adding 1/4 cup of cereal to one cup of water and bringing to a boil. After five or ten minutes, it will have boiled down to a thick porridge.

Once porridge is achieved, it is best to add any sweetener (brown sugar is best) right into the pot. That way it will be fully mixed and melt into the whole batch evenly. That's good enough right there, but there is so much more that can be done.

All of the following ideas for preparing red River Cereal Start with a batch of the cereal freshly made using the traditional stovetop method. Fresh fruit, yogurt, or granola can always be added to a bowl of Red River Cereal, but these suggestions offer a bit of a change.

  1. Ice Cream. Add a dollop of vanilla ice cream to the bowl for added creaminess and a hint of vanilla taste. Other flavors besides vanilla can be tried as well.
  2. Crunch up a Granola Bar. Adding granola to cereal is not a new idea. However, a broken up granola bar or two added to the pot and stirred in will give the cereal a larger crunch factor. Plus, a granola bar can substitute for other sweeteners, since granola bars are already pretty sweet.
  3. Frozen Berries. Adding fresh fruit on top of a bowl is one thing, but stirring frozen berries into the pot is another. Mixing in frozen fruit and cooking for an additional minute or two infuses fruit juice and flavor throughout the mix. The palette responds differently to this than it does to discrete pieces of fruit mixed into a bowl. Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries all work well.
  4. Added to Pancakes. After cooking, mix Red River Cereal into a batch of pancake batter at a ratio of about one part cereal to five parts pancake batter and cook pancakes as usual. This adds whole grain flavor and the flax seeds add a bit of crunch.
  5. Pure Red River Pancakes. For something really different, fry up some red river cereal in a pan just like pancakes. When cooked this way it comes out sort of like falafel but with more of a whole grain taste. Make the cakes as thin as possible so they get cooked all the way through. Serve with syrup, just like regular pancakes.

Even the biggest fan of Red River Cereal will appreciate these twists on an old favorite. These ideas might even provide a way to recruit a new member into Red River Cereal Fan club.
