How to Make a Green Smoothie

Summer is coming, so what better time to learn a new and healthy way to make an old summer stand-by? Take a fabulous fruit smoothie and give it an even healthier twist.

In the hot summer months its usually easy pretty easy to sneak some healthy fruit to a kid through a smoothie, but what about those green vegetables? Even the most well-behaved child will wrinkle their nose at the mere mention of Spinach and truth be told, even a few adults are reluctant to get their daily intake of fresh green vegetables as well.

Try making a delicious smoothie with a bit of fruit and vegetables, you'll be surprised at the mouth-watering goodness.

Making a green smoothie that matches your taste buds is easy, there's a different green smoothie for everyone. Here are a couple ideas to get you started.

(Don't have a blender yet? An immersion blender or a hand-mixer will do the job for you, but it might take a little more time. Make sure your ice is very well crushed as well.)

Spinach and Pineapple

Place in a Blender:

  • Two parts Fresh or Frozen Pineapple to one part Fresh or Frozen Spinach
  • 1/4 cup to 1/2 Crushed Ice

Blend well and enjoy!

Spinach and Strawberry

Place in a Blender:

  • Two Parts Fresh or Frozen Strawberries to One Part Fresh or Frozen Spinach
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup Crushed Ice
  • 2 Bananas - Optional

Blend well and enjoy!

Spinach and Berry Blend

Place in a Blender:

  • 1 Part Fresh or Frozen Strawberries to 1 Part Fresh or Frozen Blueberries and 1 Part Fresh or Frozen Spinach
  • 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup Crushed Ice

Blend well and enjoy!

You can also use Raspberries, Blackberries, or any other fresh berries you'd like in this variety.

Other Fruit to Mix n'Match

  • Cantalope
  • Honeydew Melon
  • Watermelon
  • Grapes

Looking for Extra Protein?

You can add any of the following to your personalized Smoothie.

  • Smooth Tofu
  • Cottage Cheese
  • Hemp Protein Powder
  • Flavored Yogurt

How about a Healthy Sweetener?

If the fruit isn't sweet enough for you, here are a few unusual but healthier options for sweeteners.

More Into Traditional Sweeteners?

  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. of Splenda
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp. of Sugar
  • 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup Flavored Yogurt

If you're looking for other green veggie ideas, broccoli or fresh green lettuce (not iceberg) works great as well. Add a touch of lemon juice or a sprig of mint if you're looking for that extra something.

And if your smoothie looks just a bit too green to be good, don't worry! Your smoothie will taste much better than you might think something so green could. If the visual effect of you blended green vegetables is still a bit too much for you, try drinking these treats through an opaque glass with a straw.
