A simple, two-ingredient strawberry sauce recipe using fresh or frozen strawberries.
A lot of home cooks don't spend a lot of time cooking with sauces. That's too bad because whether you're making boneless chicken breasts or chocolate cake, a good sauce can mean the difference between a so-so dish and a real standout winner.
And contrary to popular belief, sauces really don't have to be high in fat or calories to be delicious. This strawberry sauce is a perfect example. Fresh, flavorful, and delightfully simple to prepare, this strawberry sauce recipe is wonderfully sweet, yet it has no fat -- none!. Even better: It is very low in calories. It gets most of its sweetness from the strawberries themselves, not a lot of added sugar.
Indeed, this strawberry sauce recipe can really make a dessert special. It's the perfect complement to a light, low-fat angel food cake, for example. The strawberry sauce soaks into the cake, giving the cake a succulent, natural fruity flavor and incredibly moist texture.
When drizzled over flourless chocolate cake, this strawberry sauce provides just the right hint of juiciness to complement the dense chocolately flavor of the cake. And when spooned over vanilla ice cream or vanilla frozen yogurt, this sauce turns a boring dessert into a sundae.
You can even use this sauce as a syrup for pancakes and french toast, as a topping for crepes, cannolis, chocolate brownies and lemon bars, or in your favorite smoothie recipes.
Place the strawberries, sugar and orange juice in a medium saucepan over medium high heat. Stir the mixture until the sugar is dissolved. Add the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium low. Simmer, stirring occasionally to break up the strawberries, until the sauce thickens and the strawberries are soft, but still chunky.
Serve over angel food cake, frozen yogurt or ice cream immediately. Store any leftover sauce in the refrigerator in an air tight container up to 1 week or freeze, then thaw before serving.
