Check Out Farmers Markets

The Freshest, Cheapest Produce Around

The farmer's market is the absolute best place to buy produce. Here's what to find there.

Want the best-quality produce at the best price? Look no further than your local farmer's market. Farmer's markets can be found all over the country (check Local Harvest to find the closest ones to you), and many are still going strong well into October.

It's a fun outing for kids and a great way to find different varieties of fruits and vegetables than you'd normally find at the supermarket. That's because the fruits and vegetables you find in grocery stores are grown for durability: they have to be able to travel long distances. But the produce at your local farmer's market only has to travel from the farm to the market.

This time of year is a great time to find unique varieties of apples, squash (including pumpkins), greens, garlic and potatoes. When you bring your produce home, make honey roasted applesauce, apple cake, butternut squash soup, or carrot souffle.

And don't forget the pumpkins! Even if you don't make them with fresh pumpkin, these recipes will get you in the mood for fall: pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin rolls, pumpkin cookies with Raisinets and pumpkin bran muffins.
